Rigged, Reckless and Rushed – oil and gas leasing on public lands

  • 421 Cannon House Office Building (map)

When: October 4th @ 1 pm
Where: Cannon House Office Building, Room 421
Who: Chelsea Bookout, Paonia, CO; Casey Montandon, Moab, UT; Jason Baldes, Wind River Indian Reservation, WY; with Jenny Kordick (The Wilderness Society) and Natalie Levine (National Parks Conservation Association)

Right now, some of our last remaining wild places are under tremendous threat from the Administration’s increased push for more oil, gas and mineral extraction on public lands. And despite broad public support for public lands protections, the Department of the Interior is poised to auction off more than a million acres of public lands in the West, including lands next door to many national parks, to the oil and gas industry this December.

The Interior Department has issued several policy changes and directives that are leading to increased leasing, with one notable theme: shutting the public out. Secretary Zinke has made it harder and harder for citizens and local communities to raise concern and is simultaneously pushing the Bureau of Land Management to lease more and more as fast as possible.

Learn about how these policy changes are leading to rushed leasing, and the implications for Western communities, local economies, and our treasured public lands.
