Panelists: Christine Middlemiss, the UK’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dame Sally Davies, the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, and Lord Gardiner of Kimble, the Undersecretary for the UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.
Briefing on Global Animal Disease Control Research and Strategies

Dr. Middlemiss and Lord Gardiner will be speaking about a global research initiative (STAR-IDAZ, of which the USDA's Agriculture Research Service is a member) focused on improving animal disease control strategies, including vaccines, and on coordinating research programs at the international level for new and improved animal health strategies for more than 30 priority diseases, infections, and issues. Dame Davies will speak about the importance of international collaboration to achieve an integrated approach towards animal disease control to help tackle the impacts of antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. Middlemiss is the UK government’s chief spokesperson on animal health and welfare issues, Dame Davies is the UK’s most senior adviser on health care, and Lord Gardiner is a senior official in the UK’s equivalent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
