Within Reach: Ambitious Federal Solutions to Tackle America's Housing Affordability Crisis

  • CVC-212, Capitol Visitor Center (map)

The Opportunity Starts at Home campaign is hosting a congressional briefing on January 24, 2019 to highlight the release of its national policy agenda, entitled “Within Reach.” Over the past year, leading national organizations from the housing, education, health, civil rights, anti-hunger, anti-poverty, and faith-based sectors have joined together through Opportunity Starts at Home, an unprecedented multi-sector campaign to advocate for more robust and equitable federal housing policies. The campaign's national policy agenda argues that Congress must take long-overdue action to ensure that the most vulnerable low-income households can afford safe, decent homes.

The national policy agenda outlines a broad set of long-term and short-term federal policies necessary to solve the housing affordability crisis, such as expanding rental assistance, expanding the supply of deeply affordable housing, and providing emergency financial assistance for households experiencing unforeseen economic shocks. The report also showcases research demonstrating that housing is a critical driver of outcomes in many other areas of life, such as health, education, economic mobility, food security, and poverty reduction.

Because of the deep intersections between housing and other sectors, we are encouraging those who specialize in a variety of fields to attend this briefing.

During this event, attendees will learn more about the campaign's national policy agenda and will hear from leaders that have joined the campaign from a variety of sectors. Speakers and panelists include:

  • Diane Yentel, President and CEO, National Low Income Housing Coalition

  • Clarence Anthony, CEO and Executive Director, National League of Cities

  • Jim Weill, President, Food Research & Action Center

  • Mary Kusler, Senior Director of Center for Advocacy, National Education Association

  • Allison Bovell-Ammon, Deputy Director of Policy Strategy, Children's HealthWatch

  • Mike Koprowski, National Director, Opportunity Starts at Home
