Second Chances for Students: Reducing Recidivism Through College Education

  • 325 Russell Senate Office Building (map)

College education in prison settings has shown to substantially reduce the risk of recidivism while increasing cost-savings at the state and federal level. Unfortunately, the 1994 ban on Pell Grant eligibility for people in state and federal prisons has significantly decreased access to college education for most prisoners.

Join FAMM, Ed Trust, and our panel of experts as we discuss reinstating Pell Grant eligibility to those in our nation's prisons. Our panel will feature:

  • Heidi Washington, Director, Michigan Department of Corrections

  • John King, President and CEO, The Education Trust

  • Gerard Robinson, Executive Director, The Center for Advancing Opportunity

  • Debi Campbell, Deputy Director of Story Telling and Family Outreach, FAMM

  • Hayne Yoon, Director of Government Affairs, The Vera Institute of Justice (Moderator)
