Briefing on the Outcome of the Department of Education's Negotiated Rulemaking on Accreditation and Innovation in Higher Education

  • 2261 Rayburn House Office Building (map)

Earlier this month, the Department of Education completed a negotiated rulemaking that would deregulate accreditation, undermining a key pillar in the federal triad responsible for quality oversight of the nation’s higher education system. In a process largely dominated by the interested of colleges, the higher education lobby , and accrediting agencies, agreed-upon rules would weaken accountability for students and taxpayers. Ultimately these proposed changes have the potential to allow low-quality schools to flourish and leave accreditors with little responsibility for the bad actors they approve.
