As co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Access to Legal Aid Caucus, we would like to bring to your attention a briefing the American Academy of Arts & Sciences is hosting to discuss the growing national crisis in the lack of access to civil legal services.
The briefing is based on the Winter 2019 issue of Daedalus, the Journal of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, titled “Access to Justice.” This issue is part of a larger Academy project, Making Justice Accessible, which examines the crisis facing civil legal aid, including the challenges the legal community faces in providing quality legal assistance, how those challenges impact communities socially and economically, and where there are opportunities to improve the civil justice system. According to the Academy, Making Justice Accessible will “gather information about the national need for improved legal access, study innovations piloted around the country to fill this need, and advance a set of clear, national recommendations for closing the justice gap.”
The briefing will include discussion and the opportunity to ask questions from some of the premier legal academics, advocates, and jurists who participated in the “Access to Justice” publication, including:
John Levi, Chair, Board of Directors, Legal Services Corporation (welcoming remarks)
Diane Wood, Chief Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit
Robert Frank, Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management and Professor of Economics, Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University
Nathan Hecht, Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Texas
Andrew Perlman, Dean and Professor of Law, Suffolk University Law School
Rebecca Sandefur, Associate Professor of Sociology and Law, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
James Sandman, President, Legal Services Corporation
