write to invite you to a briefing entitled “Project Blitz – A State-Based Campaign against Equality and Freedom of Religion: Perspectives from State Lawmakers” scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2019, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in 2253 Rayburn House Office Building.
At this briefing, you will learn more about Project Blitz, a secretive state legislative campaign sponsored by the Christian nationalist movement to undermine the separation of religion and government, attack LGBTQ equality, and reduce access to reproductive services. This campaign employs a false and ahistorical framework of religious freedom in order to undermine religious equality for all Americans. Project Blitz is especially relevant to Members of Congress and staff because the campaign is supported by the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation.
Some examples of state legislation advanced by Project Blitz include:
Bills that allow state-licensed professionals to deny service or discriminate based on their religious beliefs.
Bills that mandate that school districts teach Bible classes.
Bills that allow taxpayer-funded foster care and adoption agencies to discriminate against parents and children based on their religious beliefs.
The speakers for this event will include state lawmakers who have encountered Project Blitz-related legislation in their states and who have worked to oppose this campaign. Panelists will include:
The Honorable John Marty, Minnesota State Senator
The Honorable Juan Mendez, Arizona State Senator
The Honorable David Grosso, District of Columbia Council Member
Alison Gill, American Atheists
I am hosting this briefing in coordination with the Congressional Freethought Caucus and the following organizations: American Atheists, American Humanist Association, Center for Inquiry, Freedom From Religion Foundation, Interfaith Alliance, Jews for a Secular Democracy, National LGBTQ Task Force, PFLAG National, Political Research Associates, and Secular Coalition for America.
