Join Rep. DeLauro and the Food Safety Caucus for a Briefing
Thursday, June 20 — 2-3pm — 1540A Longworth
Please join me and the Congressional Food Safety Caucus next week for a briefing on Food Safety in the United States.
Despite almost a decade since the passage of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the U.S. food supply is still plagued by large food outbreaks that cause foodborne illness. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, foodborne illness causes 48 million sicknesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 death each year.
A recent report by U.S. PIRG found "recalls on the rise." The number of meat and poultry recalls associated with severe illness and death have increased by 83% since 2013. Recalls of contaminated produce and processed foods have also increased since 2013. And, according to CDC data, these outbreaks have caused increases in foodborne illnesses.
Thus, I hope you will join me and a panel of subject matter experts to discuss Food Safety in the United States and the policy options to address current inadequacies.
