Health care 2020: What's Missing from the Debate?

  • 2261 Rayburn House Office Building (map)

There is much that ails the U.S. health care system: it's expensive, disjointed and the incentives are misaligned. Any health care reform package should work to improve the health of our population through a financially sustainable model that ensures all Americans have timely access to effective, affordable, quality medical care; and makes, strategic long-term investments in the social determinants of health.

A holistic health reform package would include: (1) universal coverage; (2) a defined benefit (3) an accountable delivery system (4) a global budget indexed to a sustainable rate of growth; and (5) savings reinvested to address social determinants of health. Political conversations around “repeal and replace,” “Medicare-for-all,” and a “public option” do not address all five key elements.

Please join PPI, the honorable John Kitzhaber, MD, former three-term governor of Oregon, and other health care and policy leaders for a panel discussion on what is missing from our current health care debate. We will discuss how effective health care reform packages can take many forms but without addressing all five elements, are incomplete.
