The commercialization of space actually began in the 1970s when private telecommunication companies launched and then continued to operate satellites for profit. As time has passed momentum has slowly built for further utilization of the space environment for economic purposes by private industry. Today many talk about “commercializing LEO,” a term that covers a broad array of meaning. The panel will address various visions for, barriers to, and advantages of creating a nongovernment-based, private industry-driven economic sphere in LEO and the role of government in this process.
